In a time when women were expected to stay at home and in the kitchen, Ruth Elder was an actress and an early aviatrix with big ideas. She survived an attempt to be the first American woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean when mechanical problems forced her to land in the ocean. And, in 1929, she and nineteen other female pilots embarked on a 2,759 mile cross country race, nicknamed the Powder Puff Derby.
