February 22 Birthday: THE HOUSE THAT GEORGE BUILT. George Washington

George Washington- First U.S. President
Feb. 22, 1832 – Dec. 14, 1799

The House That George Built by Suzanne Slade. Illustrated by Rebecca Bond (Charlesbridge, 2012)

In
lively prose, The House That George Built recounts George Washington’s
quest to build a house for all future presidents to reside in, The White
House. He chose the spot, held a contest for best designs, and
supervised every step of the eight-year project. Ironically, George
Washington was the only U.S. President to never occupy the house.
In
addition to the well-crafted and succinct prose, the pages include a
fun, progressive poem, mirroring the structure of “The House that Jack
Built.”
